In the past few years, Miles Davis has devoted himself more and more to Expressionist painting . At first he drew sketchy line drawings and primitive figures, later experimenting with bright colors and surreal motifs. He was heavily influenced by the work of the Milanese Memphis Group . Later, his artwork was inspired by the colors and motifs of African folk painting. He also painted many slightly aloof self-portraits. Many of his drawings and pictures can be found on his record sleeves in later years. In contrast to his extensive musical education, he was self-taught in drawing.
